LISTEN TO YOUR EYES/ Abraham Lincoln
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He successfully led the country through the American Civil War and abolished slavery with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

LISTEN TO YOUR EYES/ Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa (1910-1997) founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950, and for over 45 years happily ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Upon acceptance, she was asked, "What can we do to promote world peace?" Her answer was simple:

LISTEN TO YOUR EYES/ Sharbat Gula
Who is Sharbat Gula?
Famously known as the "Afghan Girl", Sharbat Gula's portrait was taken by National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry in 1984. Gula was then 11 years old, living in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Today Gula lives in a small village in Afghanistan with her husband and three children. Read her story here.
Why does she inspire us?
Have you ever seen eyes like that? They are 'haunted and haunting.' They disturb us, they move us, they fill us with wonder. If eyes are windows to the soul, then hers is one full of fierce, heartbreaking beauty.

1953 marries Coretta Scott and settles in Montgomery, Alabama
1955 receives Doctorate of Philosophy in Systematic Theology from Boston University
1955 joins the bus boycott after Rosa Parks was arrested on December 1; on December 5, he is elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, making him the official spokesman for the boycott
--> On November 13, the Supreme Court rules that bus segregation is illegal, ensuring victory for the boycott.
1957 forms the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to fight segregation and achieve civil rights
--> 1958: The U.S. Congress passed the first Civil Rights Act since reconstruction.
1959 visits India to study Mohandas Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence
--> In November 1961, the Interstate Commerce Commission bans segregation in interstate travel due to work of MLK and the Freedom Riders.
1963 on April 13th, launches the Birmingham Campaign; writes "Letter from Birmingham Jail"
--> On May 10, 1963, the Birmingham agreement is announced. The stores, restaurants, and schools will be desegregated, hiring of blacks implemented, and charges dropped.
1963 leads the march on Washington on August 28th; delivers "I have a dream" speech
1964 receives the Nobel Peace Prize
1966 moves into a Chicago slum tenement to attract attention to the living conditions of the poor; initiates a campaign to end discrimination in housing, employment, and schools
1968 dies from a fatal gunshot in Memphis, Tennessee

Who is Frida?
An artist who lived in Mexico in the first half of the 20th century. Throughout her lifetime, Frida painted hundreds of self-portraits, usually given as gifts to friends and family.
Why does she inspire us?
"The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration."
Frida painted the way others write in a diary. Time after time, she laid her soul bare, giving the world a raw look at her inner workings. We love her because she followed her impulse to put a brush to the canvas and paint her own image for reasons she couldn't even articulate. We love her because she gave us thought-provoking and beautiful pictures that never lose their magic. We love Frida because she was honest.
